The Hand Restored
The time has come for the Church to stop ignoring its withered hand. It's time for us to
acknowledge the five-fold ministry as one of the key elements of the process by which Christ is
building His Church. Jesus Christ is the Lord and the Head of the Church. He is building the
Church for His glory, not for ours. The purpose of the five-fold ministry--the eldership of
apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers--is to lift up Jesus Christ as the standard for
the world. We are to live not to ourselves but to Christ. The only way we can do this is to allow
Him to live His life in and through us.
When we allow the Lord to have His way, we will see the five-fold ministry grow to full maturity
and effectiveness in our midst. Then the Church will once again exhibit the faith and foundation,
the power and passion, of the true New Testament Church. All the saints will be trained,
equipped, and built up to do the work of the ministry. No longer will Kingdom work be confined
to only a select few or a particular building. The gospel of Jesus Christ and ministry in His name
will flow out into the workplace and the home, into the malls and the grocery stores, into the
slums and the suburbs, into the coffeehouses and the country clubs, into the cities and the country,
to all nations, races, and people groups.
Prayer:
"Lord, build Your Church. Restore the hand of ministry that has become withered through
neglect, misunderstanding, and unbelief. Equip Your people for the work of the ministry so that
we, Your Body, may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in our knowledge of You.
Bring us to full maturity, to the whole measure of Your fullness so that learning to speak the
truth in love, we can work with You to reach a lost and dying world. In Jesus' name, amen."
